Collapse is a sweeping Cold War thriller trilogy spanning the years from the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 to Vladimir Putin’s rise to power in 1999. Blending real historical events with espionage, political conspiracy and human drama, the series follows Irish journalist Sarah Allen, disillusioned Stasi officer Anton Berger and Soviet intelligence officer Major Sergey Spiridonovich as they are drawn into the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union itself.
Beginning in East Berlin during the final days of the German Democratic Republic, the trilogy moves through the fall of Communism, the failed coup against Gorbachev and the chaotic birth of post-Soviet Russia. As governments collapse and old loyalties disintegrate, each must confront the human cost of ideology, ambition and power in a world being reshaped before their eyes

East Berlin, February 1989. As the German Democratic Republic begins to fracture under the pressure of mass protests and Soviet reform, Irish freelance journalist Sarah Allen arrives in the divided city searching for the story that will make her career. Instead, she finds herself pulled into a dangerous web of espionage, political violence and betrayal.
After investigating the killing of a young man at the Berlin Wall, Sarah is abducted by Colonel Anton Berger, a disillusioned Stasi officer who secretly passes her classified intelligence. Desperate to smuggle the documents to the West, Sarah hides them in the wheelchair of a friend fleeing East Germany. The attempt ends in disaster, forcing her to escape into Hungary, where she becomes entangled with families risking everything to flee the collapsing regime.
But larger forces are already in motion.
As reform spreads through Eastern Europe, Soviet hardliners fear the destruction of the Communist bloc. Operating from the shadows, Russian Army Major Sergey Spiridonovich orchestrates sabotage, unrest and political manipulation across the Eastern Bloc, working alongside a calculating KGB lieutenant colonel named Vladimir. Their objective is simple: crush reform, destabilise Mikhail Gorbachev, and preserve Soviet power at any cost.
As protests erupt across Leipzig, Dresden and East Berlin, Sarah’s pursuit of the truth drives her ever deeper into the machinery of a dying state. Torn between ambition and guilt, she watches lives destroyed in pursuit of the story that could define her future.
By October 1989, the hardliners are ready to launch Project X — a covert operation designed to provoke Soviet military intervention and ignite a confrontation with the West. But as hundreds of thousands of East Germans flood the streets demanding freedom, events begin to spiral beyond anyone’s control.

A note from the Author
This, my fourth novel, and first trilogy, came to me because of my interest in the history of a period I lived through. Life, as they say, is lived forward, and understood backwards. The more I researched what had happened, what could have happened, and what might have happened differently, the better I (sort of) understand the world today.
If time is a river, then there is no doubt that now we are living in the flood that rose in 1989, and the beginning of The Collapse.
