So, the key theme of my novel is is sentient AI.

When considering sentient AI, it struck me that much of the discussion assumed sentience would emerge unexpectedly, through the inherent complexity of the systems being developed. However, since we aren't even sure what human consciousness is, any guesses we might have about 'how' will be wrong.

So. I wondered, what if someone set out with that intention?

In thinking about these 'big issues', I wanted to keep the story relatable and enjoyable, as a story in itself. So, I wrapped it up in a real, relatable world scenario.
